The Revolt of the Comuneros (Spanish: Guerra de las Comunidades de Castilla, “War of the Communities of Castile”) was an uprising by citizens of Castile against the rule of Charles I and his administration between 1520 and 1521. At its height, the rebels controlled the heart of Castile, ruling the cities of Valladolid, Tordesillas, and Toledo.

“The Lioness of Castilla – María Pacheco”. She forced to marry at the age of 15 with Juan de Padilla. Cultured and educated, she had high knowledge of the world and the political reality of Castile, something that most women of her time did not enjoy. When the three Castilian leaders were beheaded, María Pacheco led and governed the last focus of communal resistance in Castilla. She took refuge in Porto where she firmly upheld her ideals of freedom and beliefs. She died in abject poverty a decade after the commune’s defeat in Villalar.
