HISTORY OF SEGOVIA – CLOTH INDUSTRY

Since the late fifteenth century Segovian cloth industry reached a very remarkable boom, to the point of becoming the city from 1550 the first industrial capital of Castile´kingdoms. This industry was based on a vast cottage merino sheep transhumance that, after passing through the numerous sheers in the area, producing a fine wool that reached fair fame throughout Europe. The different trades that integrated the elaboration of the cloths got to gather up to 34,000 workers. Weavers, dyers, spinners, fullers, drapers, tailors, etc., filled the streets with the spectacle of their activity and grace. And thanks to merchants or cloth makers, Segovian products spread throughout the world.
